The State Minister of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Ahmed Omar Mohamed, today inaugurated the Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting for the project “Conserving Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity and Restoring Ecosystem Services in Globally Relevant and Vulnerable Sites in Somalia.”
The meeting focused on project progress, strategic guidance, and strengthening efforts to protect terrestrial and marine biodiversity while restoring ecosystem services in key sites across Somalia.
Mr. Ahmed Omar Mohamed stated that the project holds significant importance for environmental resilience, community livelihoods, and ensuring sustainable development in the country. He also urged all participating agencies and stakeholders to work collaboratively to safeguard natural resources and enhance ecosystem services.
The project emphasizes critical terrestrial and marine areas that possess globally significant biodiversity and are vulnerable to climate change and human-induced impacts. It is expected that the project will deliver tangible outcomes in environmental restoration, wildlife conservation, and the economic empowerment of local communities.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange ideas and new strategies to advance the project, ensuring that all activities align with the developmental goals of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the country’s environmental protection policies.
This project is supported by both international and local organizations and is anticipated to serve as a model for advancing biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration in Somalia.
