Somalia Participates in the INC5 International Conference Against Plastic Pollution
Geneva, Switzerland – August 12, 2025 – The Federal Republic of Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Major General Bashiir Mohamed Jama, participated in the 5th Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC5), held in Geneva, Switzerland. The conference focused on addressing plastic pollution and strengthening global environmental protection efforts.
During the meeting, Minister Bashiir extended heartfelt condolences to the Government of Ghana and the family of the late Minister of Environment of Ghana, Mr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who recently passed away. He emphasized the importance of African cooperation in protecting and preserving the environment.
The Minister noted that Somalia, with the longest coastline in mainland Africa, is deeply concerned about the growing threat of plastic pollution, which poses a serious risk to communities and marine resources. He also highlighted key challenges facing the country, including:
- Weak waste management infrastructure
- Limited technical knowledge and expertise
- The urgent need for investment and technical support to improve the current situation
Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to enacting strict anti-pollution laws, supporting community-led coastal cleanup initiatives, and raising public awareness about environmental protection.
Minister Bashiir called on the international community to strengthen cooperation and support for Somalia, particularly in the areas of knowledge, technical capacity, and financing, to enable the implementation of sustainable and effective solutions.
The conference was hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), under the theme: “Towards a Pollution-Free Planet.”
The Federal Government of Somalia reiterated its determination to continue efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainable development, with a strong focus on international collaboration.
