Somalia Officially Opens National Conference on Environment and Climate Change

 

National Environment and Climate Change Conference Officially Opened in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, Somalia – June 4, 2025 – The Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Salah Ahmed Jama, officially opened the National Environment and Climate Change Conference, organized by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia.

The conference, held in Mogadishu, is of great importance for the country’s plans to address environmental and climate challenges. In his opening remarks, Mr. Salah Ahmed Jama spoke about the Somali government’s commitment to tackling the impacts of climate change, while developing sustainable policies to protect the environment and natural resources.

“Today, we demonstrate that Somalia is ready to lead environmental change by uniting efforts at the national and international levels to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Mr. Salah.

The conference provides an opportunity to discuss the environmental challenges facing Somalia, such as recurrent droughts, floods, deforestation, and the impacts of climate change on communities and the country’s economy. The event also includes experts, representatives from international organizations, civil society, and other stakeholders.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Mr. Bashir Mohamud Jama, described the conference as playing a major role in preparing and implementing national policies to protect the environment, and making Somalia a country ready to adapt to climate change.

This conference is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen awareness, planning, and cooperation in environmental protection, following the national strategy for climate change mitigation and resilience.
