Minister of Environment Launches GEED Program and Chairs the First Steering Committee Meeting
Mogadishu, 21 May 2025

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Major General Bashir Mohamed Jama, officially participated today in the launch of the new GEED program and chaired the inaugural meeting of the Steering Committee held in Mogadishu. This event marks a significant step forward for Somalia in climate adaptation and environmental development.

Minister Bashir delivered a key speech in which he expressed his gratitude to the European Union and the German Government for their continued support to the Somali people, particularly in the areas of environment and climate change.

“The GEED program goes beyond just energy. It is a project that fully aligns with Somalia’s development aspirations,” the Minister stated. He emphasized the importance of the program in helping the country establish an effective framework to address the impacts of climate change.

The GEED program specifically supports Somalia’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and the upcoming NDC 3.0 (Nationally Determined Contributions), which is scheduled to be submitted next month. This effort aims to strengthen Somalia’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement and enhance its national climate response strategies.

The Steering Committee meeting also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange ideas and recommendations on the effective implementation of the GEED program, ensuring that it achieves its intended environmental, energy, and climate adaptation goals.

The GEED program is set to become a cornerstone for sustainable development in Somalia, promoting strong cooperation between the government, international partners, and the Somali public at large.
