The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia Meets with IOM Deputy Director General to Discuss Climate Cooperation and Displacement

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Major General Bashir Mohamed Jama, today welcomed Ms. Ugochi Daniels, the Deputy Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to Mogadishu.

The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the following key areas:

Climate action and addressing the impacts of climate change

Enhancing the resilience of vulnerable communities affected by climate shocks

Improving access to international climate financing

Utilizing data and evidence-based approaches to understand and manage climate-induced displacement

Minister Jama and Ms. Daniels emphasized the importance of proactively preventing climate-related displacement through the use of accurate data and research tailored to local environmental contexts and community needs.

The meeting was also attended by the Ministry’s Director General, Mr. Abdirisak Ahmed Ali, the National Climate Finance Coordinator, Ms. Ayan Harare, along with representatives from IOM Somalia.

This high-level engagement underscores Somalia’s commitment to fostering effective partnerships to combat the challenges of climate change, particularly at a time when environmental threats and displacement continue to grow in severity.
