Somalia’s Strong Commitment to Climate Adaptation Highlighted at Global Center on Adaptation Leaders’ Summit

In Baku, Azerbaijan, on November 13, Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, addressed the Global Center on Adaptation Leaders’ Summit, reaffirming Somalia’s strong dedication to tackling climate change through localized, environmentally focused efforts. Minister Al-Makhzoumi emphasized that climate adaptation strategies must be embedded within Somali communities by enhancing local governance, actively involving community leaders, and strengthening grassroots efforts.
She stressed that these approaches would empower communities to build resilience against the increasingly severe impacts of climate change. By involving leaders at every level, the minister noted that Somalia can achieve long-term environmental sustainability and climate preparedness.
Minister Al-Makhzoumi concluded with a call for robust international cooperation and direct financial support for frontline communities already facing the impacts of climate change. She highlighted the need for immediate action and resources to bolster local resilience efforts, ensuring that support reaches the most affected communities. #COP29
