Somalia’s Environment Minister Calls for Strengthened Early Warning Systems at COP29

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia, Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, spoke at the UNCC platform during #COP29, emphasizing the importance of strengthening early warning systems to better prepare Somalia against the impacts of climate change. The Minister highlighted the government’s efforts in building an integrated system that provides communities with accurate and timely information to mitigate the effects of recurrent floods and droughts in the country.
Minister Khadija noted that utilizing national climate forecasting plays a crucial role in protecting communities and addressing climate-related challenges. This early warning system connects environmental data with community knowledge, enabling the dissemination of warnings to people wherever they are through simple tools such as mobile phones and radios.
In conclusion, the Minister called on the international community to support Somalia’s efforts to enhance early warning systems, stressing that investing in these systems will lead to a more resilient and safer Somali society.
