Somalia’s Council of Ministers Approves Landmark Bill Establishing the National Environmental Management Authority

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Major General Bashir Mohamed Jama, has expressed his sincere appreciation to the Council of Ministers following their in-depth deliberation and approval of the Bill establishing the National Environmental Management Authority.
The Minister described the approval of the bill as a historic step that reflects strong national commitment and responsibility in addressing climate change challenges, while strengthening efforts to protect Somalia’s natural resources.
“We extend our gratitude to the Council of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia for thoroughly discussing and approving the bill to establish the National Environmental Management Authority. This historic decision demonstrates firm resolve to confront climate change impacts, enhance the protection of natural resources, and prevent the severe environmental degradation facing our country,” said Minister Bashir.
The establishment of the National Environmental Management Authority is expected to play a critical role in guiding, coordinating, and overseeing environmental protection efforts, combating land degradation, and supporting climate change adaptation, in line with national development plans and international environmental commitments.
The Minister further emphasized that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change will continue its efforts to build strong institutions capable of safeguarding the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for present and future generations.
