Somalia Urges Greater Global Support for Africa’s Climate Resilience at Addis Ababa Summit

Somalia Calls for Stronger Climate Action at Global Climate Week in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, September 6, 2025 – Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Bashir Mohamed Jama, delivered a keynote address today at a high-level forum on Africa’s special climate needs, held during the 2nd Global Climate Week (CW2) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The gathering brought together environment and climate ministers from across Africa to discuss the continent’s unique challenges and priorities in the global climate agenda.

Africa’s Low Emissions, High Vulnerability

In his remarks, Minister Jama highlighted that while Africa contributes only 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the continent faces disproportionate impacts of climate change. He stressed that Somalia, responsible for less than 0.003%, is among the hardest hit, facing recurring droughts, devastating floods, and widespread displacement.

“Climate change is not only an environmental issue for Somalia – it is a matter of security, stability, and sustainable peace,” he noted.

Somalia’s Climate Progress

Minister Jama also outlined the progress Somalia has made in advancing its climate agenda, including:

The National Transformation Plan (NTP)

Submission of NDC 3.0

The National Adaptation Plan (NAP)

Adoption of environmental laws and policies

Ratification of key international environmental agreements

He emphasized that these efforts demonstrate Somalia’s commitment to confronting the adverse effects of climate change.

Call for Global Support

Concluding his address, Minister Jama urged the international community to:

Formally recognize Africa’s special needs

Scale up climate finance for vulnerable communities

Enhance technology transfer and local capacity building

Prioritize adaptation and resilience initiatives

He further stressed the importance of African-led solutions, highlighting the critical role of youth and women in driving long-term transformation.

Global promises must be translated into visible, concrete actions,” Minister Jama said, underscoring Somalia’s call for stronger international solidarity on climate resilience.
