Nairobi, 15 July 2025 — The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. General Bashir Mohamed Jama, accompanied by Dr. Guleid Abdulqadir Artan, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), held a high-level meeting with Prof. Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of WMO, at the United Nations Office in Nairobi.
The meeting addressed key areas of collaboration between Somalia and WMO, focusing on strengthening Somalia’s meteorological and climate services. Discussions centered around the re-establishment of national weather and climate forecasting systems, the development of reliable data observation networks, alignment with international standards, and sustained technical cooperation with WMO.
A major highlight of the discussion was the Somali government’s priority to establish the Somali National Meteorological Agency (SNMA). The agency is envisioned as a cornerstone in the country’s efforts to build resilience to climate risks, enhance disaster preparedness, and inform long-term development planning.
Minister Bashir reaffirmed Somalia’s strong political will and commitment to rebuilding its national meteorological capacity, stating:
“The Federal Government of Somalia is committed to establishing an independent, modern meteorological agency aligned with WMO standards. The SNMA will serve as a strategic national asset to combat climate-related risks and support sustainable development.”
In response, Prof. Saulo welcomed Somalia’s determination and reiterated WMO’s readiness to provide technical and institutional support:
“WMO is fully committed to working with Somalia to re-establish its national meteorological agency, improve the quality of climate services, and enhance the capacity of national institutions to respond to climate challenges.”
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, representatives from the Somali Embassy in Kenya, WMO regional and sub-regional office leadership, and senior technical experts from WMO headquarters.
