Somalia Participates in Global High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change and Zero Waste in Istanbul

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Major General Bashir Mohamed Jama, today participated in a high-level meeting of Environment and Climate Change Ministers from around the world, held in Istanbul, Türkiye. The meeting, known as the “High-Level Ministerial Roundtable Meeting,” was part of the Zero Waste Forum 2025.
The purpose of the forum was to strengthen global cooperation on waste reduction, environmental protection, and the development of sustainable solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama stated that Somalia faces significant challenges in waste management and climate change, yet there is strong community engagement and innovation that can drive lasting positive change.
He emphasized that the Ministry is currently developing the National Waste Management Strategy, which focuses on:

Strengthening urban waste management systems,

Promoting recycling and waste-to-energy solutions, and
-
Building the capacity of institutions and communities for environmental protection.
Finally, Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama called on the global community to view climate action and waste reduction as a shared responsibility, to ensure that future generations inherit a clean and sustainable environment.
