Somalia Participates in the First-Ever Summit of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)

New Delhi, India – The Federal Government of Somalia took part in the inaugural summit of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), held in New Delhi, India.

The Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Hussein Ali Haji, accompanied by the Director of the Department of Environmental Protection, Mr. Abdirashid Cartan, represented Somalia at this important global event organized by the Government of India.

The summit marked the official launch of an international alliance aimed at uniting global efforts to protect and conserve big wild cats—such as tigers, leopards, and lions—which are increasingly at risk of extinction. Somalia is one of the founding member states of this new alliance, highlighting the country’s active role in global environmental and wildlife protection efforts.

In his address to the summit, Deputy Minister Hussein Ali Haji emphasized the importance of protecting wildlife within Somalia and across the Horn of Africa region. He stressed that strong international cooperation is essential to preserving biodiversity and strengthening environmental action in countries vulnerable to climate change.

During the summit, the Deputy Minister also held a bilateral meeting with India’s Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. The two officials agreed to strengthen environmental cooperation between their countries, particularly in the areas of technical training, joint programs, and wildlife conservation initiatives.

In conclusion, the Federal Government of Somalia reiterated its commitment to actively participating in international efforts to protect the environment, combat climate change, and preserve endangered wildlife species.
