Somalia Participates in Inaugural National Consultation on the Global Shield Against Climate Risks
The Acting Minister of Environment and Climate Change, who also serves as the State Minister, H.E. Ahmed Omar Mohamed, attended the opening of Somalia’s first National Consultation on the Global Shield Against Climate Risks Initiative. The meeting focused on exploring financial opportunities to mitigate the risks of climate change and related disasters, such as floods and droughts.
The Global Shield Initiative, launched at COP27, is a global partnership between the V20 countries (climate-vulnerable nations) and the G7 countries (developed nations). Its goal is to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable nations by providing financial support before disasters strike. As one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, Somalia stands to benefit significantly from this initiative.
During the event, Somalia’s In-Country Process Stock-Take Report and Gap Analysis was also presented, highlighting the current state of climate risk management in the country, as well as the challenges and gaps that need to be addressed. This report serves as an entry point for Somalia to benefit from the opportunities offered under the Global Shield.
In his remarks, the State Minister stressed that Somali communities are facing recurrent climate-related risks that affect livelihoods, food security, and the economy. He underlined the importance of allocating financial resources to climate preparedness in order to prevent recurring national disasters.
Over the past years, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has taken the lead in developing key national climate policies and frameworks, including the National Adaptation Plan (NAP), the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), and the National Climate Change Strategy (2025–2029). These initiatives demonstrate the Federal Government of Somalia’s strong commitment to strengthening climate resilience and safeguarding the future of Somali society.
