Addis Ababa, 9 September 2025 – During the Second Africa Climate Summit (Africa Climate Summit 2), the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, General Bashir Mohamed Jama, today attended the Meeting of Ministers of Meteorological Services of Eastern and Central Africa (RFCS) held in Addis Ababa. The meeting specifically focused on strengthening climate forecasting services, data sharing, and regional cooperation.
In his speech, the Minister emphasized that Somalia is on the frontline of climate change impacts, such as prolonged droughts, recurring floods, and widespread displacement across the country. He pointed out that these climate-related events undermine livelihoods, cripple the economy, and increase security vulnerabilities.
The Minister stressed the importance of strengthening regional climate forecasting services and investing in technical infrastructure and early warning systems for climate risks. He highlighted that accurate forecasting data is a critical tool that can save lives, protect property, and support governments in planning and decision-making for sustainable solutions.
Meanwhile, the Minister also attended the IGAD Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Peace, and Displacement, which issued a joint Communiqué. The meeting resolved to establish a tripartite technical team and launch a joint initiative addressing the linkages between climate, displacement, and peace, with particular priority given to supporting vulnerable populations.
The Communiqué strongly emphasized that IGAD member states must speak with one unified voice on climate and displacement challenges, while also working together to secure fair financing, accurate forecasting services, and sustainable solutions rooted in regional cooperation and global support.
