Somalia Champions Environmental Action at the 20th African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN20)
Nairobi, Kenya – July 18, 2025 — The Federal Government of Somalia was proudly represented at the 20th African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN20) by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, H.E. General Bashir Mohamed Jama. The conference took place in Nairobi, Kenya, from July 15–18, 2025, bringing together high-level delegates from across the continent and beyond.
AMCEN20, convened by the Government of Kenya in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), gathered senior representatives from African nations, regional bodies such as the African Union (AU) and IGAD, as well as key international institutions including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the African Development Bank (AfDB). The primary focus of the gathering was to address critical environmental issues, climate change, and the pressing need for increased climate finance across the African continent.
During the conference, Minister Bashir delivered a powerful statement on Somalia’s climate vulnerabilities and environmental priorities. He detailed the urgent threats facing the country, including prolonged droughts, recurrent floods, land degradation, and the escalating impacts of climate change — all of which severely affect the livelihoods of millions of Somalis.
Minister Bashir reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to playing a proactive role in regional and global efforts to protect the environment. However, he stressed the necessity for fair and accessible climate financing mechanisms to support countries like Somalia, which face the brunt of climate-related impacts despite contributing the least to global emissions.
Throughout the conference, the Minister participated in high-level dialogues and strategic sessions aimed at enhancing regional cooperation and collective action on environmental governance. His advocacy underscored the urgent need for timely investments and support to ensure vulnerable nations can build resilience and implement meaningful climate adaptation measures.
For Somalia, AMCEN20 was a crucial platform to raise its voice, share its experiences, and shape the environmental agenda of the African continent. The country’s active participation reflected a strong commitment to engaging in multilateral decision-making and fostering sustainable solutions for current and future generations.
