The Somalia Pavilion at COP28 in Dubai, inaugurated by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, stood as an icon to Somalia’s commitment to addressing climate change and its dedication to a Greener Somalia. The Pavilion hosted a variety of events, each focusing on different aspects of climate action and sustainability, reflecting Somalia’s multifaceted approach to these global challenges.
Key events at the Pavilion included discussions on enhancing Somalia’s National Early Warning Systems, emphasizing the need for resilience against climate disasters. The African CSOs Biodiversity Alliance led conversations on creating a fair and equitable financial architecture for climate change, highlighting the role of civil society organizations in this endeavor.
Collaboration was a recurring theme, exemplified by Somalia’s work with ICLEI Africa to address societal inequality through strategic development and local climate resilience. Gender inclusivity in climate finance was also a focus, with Save the Children International underscoring its importance.
The Pavilion served as a stage for joint discussions with organizations like the UN Environment Programme and Somali Greenpeace Association, tackling climate change, insecurity, and mobility in fragile states. The role of Early Warning Systems, highlighted by ICPAC, was discussed in the context of mitigating climate-related losses in Somalia.
The Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) advocated for a Just Transition in Somalia, stressing the importance of social dialogue in combating the climate crisis. The Pavilion also showcased Somali cultural artifacts, with Aw Jama Cultural Centre demonstrating how culture drives environmental conservation.
A strategic climate plan by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change was revealed, outlining a comprehensive approach to tackle climate-induced disasters. UNICEF focused on providing equitable water sanitation solutions and advocating for a sustainable climate for every child.
Discussions with FAO-Somalia explored the role of fisheries in addressing climate change, and Save the Children highlighted the impact of the climate crisis on Somali children’s rights. The Ministry of Energy launched a report on the Juba Basin, offering solutions to combat water scarcity and climate change.
