Somalia and UNEP Jointly Discuss Strengthening Environmental Protection and Combating Climate Change
Geneva – During the 5th Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC5) held in Geneva, Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, His Excellency Bashiir Mohamed Jama, held a productive meeting with the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Ms. Inger Andersen.
Also present at this important meeting were Somalia’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Ms. Khadra Duale, and a delegation from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
The discussions focused on several key areas, including:
- Strengthening environmental governance and policy transparency
- Enhancing the country’s resilience to the impacts of climate change
- Combating plastic pollution
- Advancing sustainable cooling solutions
- Expanding strategic cooperation between Somalia and UNEP
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the environment, promoting planetary health, and building an inclusive and sustainable future.
This meeting is seen as an important step reflecting Somalia’s determination to play a visible role in global efforts to address environmental challenges and climate change.
