Somalia and Switzerland Forge Strategic Climate Partnership to Boost Resilience and Sustainability

 

Somalia’s Minister of Environment Meets with Swiss Development Cooperation to Strengthen Climate Partnership
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Major General Hon. Bashir Mohamed Jama, held a fruitful meeting with the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation on climate-related issues.

This important meeting, held in Mogadishu, focused on key areas such as climate financing, improving weather forecasting systems, and building resilient environmental frameworks to combat the impacts of climate change. The discussions highlighted the critical role of international collaboration in finding sustainable solutions to the growing climate challenges.

Attending the meeting were Ms. Martina Durrer, Head of International Cooperation for the Horn of Africa at the Swiss Development Cooperation, Ambassador Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle, Somalia’s Representative to the Meteorological Organization, Dr. Guled Abdulkadir Cartan, and Ayaan Harare, Somalia’s National Climate Development Coordinator.

This new partnership is expected to pave the way for unified goals centered on strengthening environmental resilience and addressing the increasing effects of climate change. Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama emphasized that the meeting reflected the Somali government’s commitment to tackling climate change through effective collaboration, technical support, and financial backing.

This initiative is part of Somalia’s ongoing efforts to enhance global cooperation in addressing climate issues, improving national forecasting capabilities, and developing plans to manage recurrent droughts and environmental degradation.

The Somalia–Switzerland partnership is set to be a key pillar for building a future that is resilient to climate change—benefiting both the current and future generations.
