Somalia and China Forge Stronger Ties on Green Development at INC5 in Geneva

Somalia and China Strengthen Green Development Partnership at INC5 in Geneva

During the Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (#INC5), the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia, H.E. Bashir Mohamed Jama, together with his delegation, held a high-level bilateral meeting with H.E. Gao Li, Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China.

The discussions centered on enhancing cooperation between Somalia and China in advancing green development initiatives and fostering stronger South–South collaboration. Both sides emphasized the importance of joint efforts in building institutional capacity and implementing effective measures to combat plastic pollution, which continues to pose a major global environmental challenge.

Minister Bashir highlighted Somalia’s commitment to pursuing sustainable development pathways and acknowledged China’s consistent support for environmental protection and climate resilience in the country. He underscored the need for practical partnerships that deliver long-term benefits for both nations.

For his part, Vice Minister Gao Li reaffirmed China’s readiness to deepen its engagement with Somalia through technical support, knowledge exchange, and investment in green growth opportunities. He also praised Somalia’s active participation in global climate and environmental negotiations.

Somalia greatly values China’s steadfast partnership and reiterated its joint commitment to advancing sustainable development goals that contribute to environmental protection, economic growth, and the well-being of both nations.
