The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Amb. Khadija Mohamed Almakhzoumi, delivered a speech at an important meeting discussing the restructuring of the global financial system and the role of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) in providing financial support to countries vulnerable to climate change. This meeting, held alongside the COP29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, focused on creating a modern economic system that provides efficient funding to address the challenges of climate change.
In her address, the Minister expressed Somalia’s gratitude for the support of the GCF, which has approved a historic $100 million project. This funding will help Somalia build community resilience and empower those affected by climate change to respond to these challenges. The funding is crucial for Somalia, providing an opportunity to move forward and develop sustainable solutions to address climate change issues in the country.
During the meeting, the GCF presented its restructuring plan to reduce financing challenges, with a target of reaching $50 billion in funding by 2030. The Minister welcomed this plan and called for a collaborative approach to create an effective economic system that can fully support countries like Somalia in building capacity to tackle the impacts of climate change
