Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia Leads National Workshop to Validate Fifth Biosafety Report

The Director General of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia, Abdirisak Ahmed Ali, officially opened a National Workshop to validate Somalia’s Fifth National Report on the implementation of the Cartagena Biosafety framework, which is part of fulfilling the international obligations of the Federal Government of Somalia.
In his opening speech, the Director General emphasized the importance of biosafety, the protection of biodiversity, and ensuring that the country responsibly manages environmental and health impacts associated with Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), in accordance with the provisions of the Cartagena Biosafety framework.
The meeting was attended by representatives from government institutions, experts, researchers, and other stakeholders.
The objective of the workshop was to conduct a technical review, validation, and quality assurance of the Fifth National Report.
This workshop demonstrates the efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia to strengthen the national biosafety system, enhance collaboration among various institutions, and fulfill international obligations related to environmental protection and public health.
