First Panel of Day Two of the National Environment and Climate Change Conference Focuses on Inclusive Climate Solutions
Mogadishu, June 5, 2025 – The second day of the National Conference on Environment and Climate Change officially commenced in Mogadishu, marked by the opening of the first high-level panel discussion focused on the theme:
“Strengthening Inclusive Climate Solutions: Community Action, Innovation, and the Role of Private Sector Leadership.”
The session was professionally moderated by Dr. Abdullahi Khalif, Director of the NDC Partnership in Somalia and overall coordinator of the conference. The panel brought together senior representatives from various international governments and organizations playing a critical role in climate action and sustainable development.
Panel participants included:
- Catriona Cluna – Representative of the UK Government, who shared insights into the UK’s contributions to climate finance and its support for Somalia’s climate planning and resilience.
- Jens-Peter Dyrbak – Senior Advisor on Governance & Climate from the Government of Denmark, who emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and engaging civil society as key partners in climate solutions.
- Dr. Romeo Bertolini – Director of the NDC Partnership, who discussed the importance of effective international cooperation and consistent support to help Somalia achieve its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
- Gabrio Marinozzi – Representative of the European Union (EU), who reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Somalia through innovation-driven environmental projects, climate financing, and strengthening community and private sector capacities.
The panel discussion emphasized the importance of inclusive participation—particularly from youth, women, the private sector, and local innovators—in tackling the impacts of climate change. It also highlighted opportunities for climate finance, capacity building, and the need for harmonized national planning aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In conclusion, panelists agreed that climate solutions should not be limited to government efforts alone, but must involve all segments of society—especially Somali youth, women, entrepreneurs, and the private sector—to achieve lasting impact.
