Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Collaborates with Gas Sector Leaders to Promote Renewable Energy and Safe Cooking Practices

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia convened a meeting today with key figures in the local gas sector. This gathering aimed to address the pressing issue of environmental sustainability and explore strategic approaches to phase out the use of coal and bolster the adoption of safe cooking methods.

The meeting, held in the Ministry’s hall, brought together an array of stakeholders, including government officials, industry leaders, and environmental experts. The primary agenda was to catalyze a shift away from coal, a significant contributor to environmental degradation, and to promote the use of renewable energy sources. This initiative is in line with Somalia’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its obligations under various international environmental agreements.

H.E Khadija Makhzumi Minister of Environment and Climate Change, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “It is important that we act swiftly and decisively to protect our environment. Transitioning away from coal to more sustainable safe practices is not just an environmental necessity but also a significant economic opportunity for Somalia.”

Discussions at the meeting focused on practical and innovative solutions to encourage renewable energy use, particularly in the context of Somalia’s unique environmental and economic landscape. These include investing in promoting efficient and clean cooking technologies, and providing incentives and support to businesses and consumers making the shift to greener practices.

The Ministry recognizes the pivotal role of the gas sector in this transition and is committed to working closely with local businesses to facilitate this change. The meeting concluded with a resolution to establish a joint task force comprising government and industry representatives to oversee the implementation of the agreed-upon strategies.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is optimistic that this collaborative effort will yield significant benefits for the environment, the economy, and the well-being of the Somali people.
