The Somali Federal Parliament has approved the establishment of the Somalia National Meteorological Agency (SNMA), a move aimed at enhancing weather monitoring, forecasting, and climate-related services nationwide.
A total of 141 members of parliament voted in favor of the legislation, marking a key step toward strengthening Somalia’s capacity to manage climate risks and natural disasters.
The agency is expected to provide timely weather updates, track atmospheric conditions, and support national planning in critical sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, and aviation.
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Bashir Mohamed Jama, expressed gratitude to the Somali Parliament for approving the National Meteorological and Climate Services Agency Act. The Minister also acknowledged the technical support of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in drafting and facilitating the legislation, highlighting the contributions of Dr. Guuled Cabdulqaadir Artan, Somalia’s WMO representative, who described the approval as a strategic step to bolster the country’s climate resilience.
“The establishment of SNMA is a significant milestone in creating a modern national agency that provides reliable weather forecasts, climate monitoring, and scientific data to guide development decisions,” the Minister said. “It will directly support the daily livelihoods of farmers, pastoralists, and fishermen.”
The Ministry of Environment reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the legislation efficiently, emphasizing that the agency will serve the broader interests of the Somali people.
