The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Bashir Mohamed Jama, delivered a comprehensive national statement today at the High-Level Segment of the UNFCCC Climate Conference (COP30) taking place in Belém, Brazil.
In his address, the Minister reaffirmed Somalia’s strong commitment to accelerating climate action, developing clear strategies to reduce the impacts of climate change, and strengthening international cooperation.
Minister Bashir thanked the Government of Brazil and the UNFCCC Executive Secretary for hosting this important conference in the city of Belém, one of the world’s most significant natural ecosystems. He highlighted Somalia’s concrete progress in implementing NDC 3.0, which is fully aligned with the National Transformation Plan (NTP) and the National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
He also announced that Somalia has officially launched the NAP, the NDC 3.0 Investment Plan, and the Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS), outlining a resilient, low-carbon, and sustainable future for the country.
Addressing the issue of Loss and Damage, the Minister emphasized the severe climate-induced challenges Somalia continues to face, which threaten lives, livelihoods, and community environments. He welcomed the establishment of the Loss and Damage Fund and called for accelerated financing to ensure vulnerable countries receive the support they urgently need.
The Minister concluded his speech with three key messages: the need for climate equity and justice, the strengthening of support for adaptation, and the translation of global commitments into concrete actions that improve people’s lives.
The Ministry of Environment will continue to uphold strong collaboration, transparency, and leadership to advance climate action that protects communities and safeguards the future of the nation.
