Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Holds Fruitful Meeting with World Bank Vice President in Washington D.C.
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Major General Bashir Mohamed Jama, held a productive and high-level meeting with Dr. Voegele, the Vice President of the World Bank, to discuss strengthening environmental and climate cooperation between Somalia and the World Bank.
The meeting centered on expanding collaboration in key areas such as environmental protection, climate change adaptation, and drought resilience initiatives. The discussions underscored the shared commitment of both parties to advancing Somalia’s environmental agenda and supporting communities most affected by the impacts of climate change.
During the meeting, Dr. Voegele reaffirmed the World Bank’s full support for Somalia’s ongoing environmental efforts, praising the Ministry’s dedication to building sustainable solutions for climate resilience. He also congratulated the Government of Somalia on submitting its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) — a major step forward that demonstrates Somalia’s commitment to addressing the global climate crisis through adaptation and emission reduction strategies.
In response, Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama expressed deep appreciation to the World Bank for its consistent and impactful support to Somalia. He emphasized that strong partnerships and joint efforts between the Ministry and the Bank are crucial for achieving Somalia’s national environmental and climate objectives.
The meeting was attended by a ministerial delegation led by Minister Bashir and senior World Bank officials responsible for environmental and climate programs. Both sides agreed to intensify cooperation and coordinate new initiatives aimed at enhancing the resilience of Somali communities that are most vulnerable to climate shocks such as droughts and floods.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen collaboration, expand project investments, and accelerate progress toward a sustainable and climate-resilient Somalia.
