State Minister Ahmed Omar Mohamed Closes Consultative Meeting on Updating Somalia’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Seventh National Report

Mogadishu, 8 October 2025 – The State Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Ahmed Omar Mohamed, today closed a consultative meeting that followed earlier sessions reviewing the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and preparing Somalia’s Seventh National Report.

The meeting included workshops, training sessions, and discussions focused on developing a Gender Action Plan and comparing the previous NBSAP with the current review to align it with the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

During the consultation, participants focused on identifying the gaps and inconsistencies between the existing National Biodiversity Strategy and the updates needed to harmonize it with the Global Biodiversity Framework. The meeting also discussed strategies for integrating gender equality and equity to ensure that all people benefit fairly from the conservation and management of natural resources.

Updating the NBSAP represents a strategic step toward strengthening Somalia’s biodiversity conservation planning. It also reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable management of natural resources, through unified national and international collaboration to safeguard the country’s natural heritage.
