Somalia’s Minister of Environment Highlights Climate Achievements at UN Climate Conference 2025
Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, H.E. General Bashir Mohamed Jama, delivered a key speech at the 2025 Climate Change Conference, highlighting the extensive climate actions undertaken by the country. He emphasized that Somalia became the first country in East Africa to submit its NDC 3.0.
Somalia’s Climate Commitments
The new plan pledges a 34% reduction in emissions by 2035 and strengthens adaptation measures to build long-term community resilience. The Minister stressed that despite facing droughts, floods, and community vulnerability, Somalia has taken a leading role in regional climate action efforts.
Somalia’s NDC allocates 45% to emissions reduction and 55% to adaptation, reflecting national and regional priorities. Minister Bashir called on the international community to support Somalia and East Africa, stating:
“Somalia has done its part; now it is the world’s responsibility to do theirs.”
Global Recognition and Participation
The conference was attended by world leaders, the UN Secretary-General, and major international agencies working on climate change, highlighting the global significance of Somalia’s climate initiatives.
