Somalia Calls for Global Unity on Solutions to Internal Displacement

Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Participates in High-Level Roundtable on Internal Displacement Solutions

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, H.E. General Bashir Mohamud Jama, today participated in the High-Level Roundtable on Solutions to Internal Displacement, where he represented the Federal Government of Somalia.

The event, held in New York on the margins of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, was jointly organized by IOM, UNDP, and UNHCR.

Internal Displacement in Somalia: A Daily Reality

In his address to the roundtable, the Minister stressed that internal displacement in Somalia is not just a statistic but a daily reality affecting millions of people. He pointed out that Somalis have been displaced by conflict, recurring droughts, floods, and the impacts of climate change.

He described internal displacement in Somalia as a development challenge, a human rights concern, and a test of governance and community resilience.

Somalia’s Concrete Actions

Minister Bashir highlighted key steps already taken by the Somali government, including:

Integrating durable solutions into the National Adaptation Plan.

Establishing institutions such as the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and the National Center for Rural Development and Durable Solutions.

Prioritizing climate resilience, with forward-looking plans linked to COP30 to help prevent new displacements.

Call for Global Unity and Investment

The Minister emphasized that addressing displacement in Somalia requires global unity, sustained investment, and strong political commitments. He called on the international community to stand with Somalia in preventing displacement, fostering partnerships with the private sector, and improving data-sharing mechanisms.

Concluding his remarks, Minister Bashir underlined that finding solutions to displacement is not only a humanitarian obligation but also a development strategy, a path towards stability, and a foundation for a prosperous future for Somalia.
