Somalia’s Environment Minister Opens Youth Climate Change Conference in Mogadishu

Minister of Environment Opens the Climate Change and Youth Conference

The city of Mogadishu today hosted the Climate Change and Youth Conference, officially opened by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, General Bashir Mohamed Jama (Bashir Goobe).

The conference, which brought together the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Mohamed Abdulqadir, Director Generals from various ministries, representatives from government institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners, focused on youth participation in climate policies, climate adaptation, and the development of sustainable solutions for the country.

Empowering Youth Voices

The main objective of the conference was to unify the vision and voice of Somali youth while encouraging their active participation in national climate agendas. It also emphasized strengthening efforts towards building a green economy and creating a sustainable society that will contribute to the long-term development of Somalia.

Remarks from Officials

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Mohamed Abdulqadir, described the conference as an important opportunity for young people, stating:
“I am very pleased that this conference has been held. We hope that future conferences will be organized jointly with the Ministry of Environment so that young people can benefit from more impactful opportunities.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, General Bashir Mohamed Jama (Bashir Goobe), highlighted the critical role of youth in shaping the nation’s future. He noted:
“Since the youth are the backbone of the country’s future, we plan to hold a larger and more inclusive conference beyond today’s event in Mogadishu. We want young people to play a visible role in decision-making, implementing climate policies, and advancing sustainable development for Somalia.”

The conference served as a vital platform for young people to share their ideas and contribute to Somalia’s national climate strategies. It also provided an opportunity to ensure that youth voices are incorporated into decision-making, paving the way for a more sustainable future led by an active and resilient young generation.
