The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed the strong support of the Somali community for the National Plan for the Prevention of Pollution from Climate Change. This commitment was reinforced during a high-level consultation meeting that brought together key stakeholders to discuss the nation’s climate agenda and strategies for its effective implementation.
During the consultation, critical topics were addressed, including the development of an ambitious, implementable, and investable Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), the establishment of commissions and innovative financing mechanisms, the strengthening of institutional capacities, and the promotion of transparency and accountability in resource utilization. Additionally, discussions emphasized the importance of fostering strategic partnerships with international donors to support Somalia’s climate action efforts.
Somalia is actively advancing its climate agenda by developing its third-generation NDC (NDC 3.0). This initiative aims to enhance climate resilience, reduce vulnerability, and mobilize climate finance, aligning national priorities with global climate objectives.
H.E. Lt. Gen. Minister Bashir stated “I want to emphasize to our partners that collaboration is essential. Somalia stands united in its climate efforts, and as a ministry, our role is to coordinate climate actions rather than implement them. We are dedicated to fostering collective support to achieve Somalia’s climate goals.”
The Federal Government’s decision to present the National Plan for the Prevention of Climate Change has been met with strong approval from international donors. The plan encompasses national standards across various priority areas essential for the country’s sustainable development and environmental preservation.
The high-level consultation was attended by Amb. Gabriel Ibrahim Abdulle, key donor representatives, and ministry experts. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing Somalia’s climate agenda and reaffirmed the country’s dedication to the global goals outlined in the 2016 Paris Agreement.
The forum also analyzed challenges in climate policy implementation, identified opportunities for improvement, and discussed the crucial role of international donors in supporting Somalia’s climate initiatives. These discussions were aligned with the National Change Plan (NTP), ensuring the country’s climate priorities are effectively addressed.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change remains committed to working with national and international stakeholders to ensure a resilient and sustainable future for Somalia.
