Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre Oversees Handover of Leadership at Ministry of Environment and Climate Change

The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, presided over the handover ceremony at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change’s headquarters today. During the event, he formally transferred leadership of the Ministry to the newly appointed Minister, H.E. Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, succeeding the former Minister, H.E. Khadija Al-Makhzoumi.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Federal MPs, government ministers, and senior officials. This occasion marks a significant transition in the Ministry’s leadership, with a renewed commitment to advancing Somalia’s environmental and climate change agenda.
The recently appointed Minister of Environment and Climate Change, H.E. Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, previously served as the Minister of the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS). He emphasized the significance of the National Children’s Plan for 2024-2029, which he has prioritized, and committed to advancing the implementation of the extensive plans laid out in the National Development Strategy for 2024-2029. He expressed appreciation for the dedication and exemplary performance of the Ministry’s employees, pledging to enhance their efforts.
In a parallel transition, the former Minister of Environment & Climate Change, Mrs. Khadijo Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, has taken on the role of Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, succeeding Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama. Mrs. Al-Makhzoumi commended the national initiatives of the Ministry and conveyed her determination to maintain a collaborative and productive approach with H.E. Lt. Gen. Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama in her new capacity.
H.E. Minister Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed highlighted the significant progress made within the Ministry. He emphasized his commitment to advancing its efforts and underscored the importance of focusing on climate change adaptation, resilience, and environmental issues. The Minister expressed his determination to achieve meaningful outcomes with the support of the Minister of State, Deputy Minister, Director General, experts, and other Ministry officials, in order to effectively fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to him in service of the nation.

He also highlighted the significant contributions of the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development, stressing its vital role in safeguarding the rights of the Somali people, particularly women and children.
H.E. PM Hamza Abdi Barre underscored the importance of close collaboration between these ministries, including the Ministries of Water & Energy Resources, Fishes & Blue Economy & the Ministry of livestock & deforestation in specific cross-cutting sectors to achieve the government’s objectives, particularly in advancing adaptation, agricultural security, environmental sustainability, addressing climate change, promoting human rights, and supporting vulnerable communities.
