Somalia’s Leadership in Climate Resilience and Peacebuilding Highlighted at #COP29

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, delivered an important speech at the High-Level Forum on “Building Connections and Partnerships to Address the Interlinked Challenges of Peacebuilding and Climate Resilience” held at HIRKAN Room during #COP29.
The Minister highlighted Somalia’s leadership in efforts to establish the new Network of Climate and Conflict-Vulnerable Countries, emphasizing the importance of strengthening global cooperation to achieve effective and context-sensitive investments for vulnerable nations.
Amb. Khadija called for an increase in climate financing and actions aimed at adapting to climate change, pointing out that Somalia, despite contributing very little to global emissions, faces severe impacts from climate change. She stressed that this new network would amplify the voices of vulnerable countries, with a special focus on fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a unified call for changes in climate investment policies.
The forum also featured senior officials from various countries and international organizations who discussed solutions to climate and peace challenges. The Minister reaffirmed Somalia’s full commitment to leading efforts towards sustainable peace and development.
