The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia, Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, today joined the platform at the UK Pavilion at COP29 with the UK’s Foreign Minister, Annaliese Dodds. During her speech, the Minister highlighted Somalia’s experience in successfully securing $79.7 million from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for the “Climate Resilience in Agriculture (Ugbaad)” project, a joint initiative between the Somali government and FAO. This project is crucial for strengthening Somalia’s food systems, aligning closely with the objectives of the National Action Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), which support sustainable development and climate resilience.
The project’s approval within a short five-month period demonstrates the effectiveness of the government’s continuous efforts, streamlined procedures, and the impact of strong global partnerships. Minister Khadija emphasized the importance of sustained political leadership, technical support, and essential collaboration between Somalia and international organizations to achieve sustainable progress.
In her closing remarks, Minister Khadija pledged that Somalia will continue its efforts towards climate goals and sustainable development, with a dedication to building a resilient and enduring future for Somalia.
