Dr. Adam Ibrahim Aw Hirsi holds the esteemed position of Minister of State for Environment & Climate Change in Somalia. He has held this vital role since the establishment of the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change in August 2022.
Career
Dr. Adam Ibrahim Aw Hirsi assumed the pivotal role of Minister of State for Environment & Climate Change in Somalia upon the establishment of the Ministry in August 2022. In this capacity, he manages crucial national tasks within the ministry and deputizes in the absence of the primary Minister. Notably, he represents Somalia on the global stage and has participated in various international conferences, including the Egypt-ICF & African Ministers Meeting in 2022 and multiple international conventions in Switzerland, including Rotterdam CoP11, Basel CoP16, and Stockholm CoP11, held in the diplomatic setting of Geneva from May 1 to May 12, 2023.
Before his current role, Dr. Aw Hirsi held prominent positions in Somalia’s government, serving as the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation (2016 – 2018) and the Minister of Justice, Constitution & Religious Affairs (2018 – 2020) in the Jubaland State. He played a significant role in justice and judicial reform, as well as the national constitutional review process.
Education and Background
Dr. Aw Hirsi’s academic journey is highlighted by his PhD in Social Sciences from Kenya Methodist University in Kenya. His wealth of experience includes serving as the Governor of Gedo region under the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (2007 – 2009). He has been a dedicated advisor on inclusive politics and civic engagement to multiple Somali prime ministers (2011 – 2016). His expertise also extends to strategic advisory roles, including his leadership in Somalia’s Ninth National Development Plan (NDP9+).
With his diverse background and exceptional leadership, Dr. Adam Aw Hirsi plays a vital role in steering Somalia’s efforts in environmental and climate change matters, contributing significantly to global initiatives addressing these critical challenges.
